Once on campus: how to get to the Social Science Division
200 meters down from the main gate is a campus-internal roundabout with a red bird (sundial) in the middle. At the sundial you face the oval-shaped academic building. Walk straight into the Jockey Club Atrium. Go to far right corner of the Jockey Club Atrium, left-most door (with sign "Exit"); take elevator 13-15 to third floor. Once exit elevator take first possible right. Division office is 3372, seminar room 3362, my (Carsten's) office 3382.

From Central to HKUST (approx. 45+ minutes to HKUST gate)
MTR Island Line towards Chai Wan, at North Point switch to the Tseung Kwan O Line towards Po Lam (on same, very wide platform), get off at Hang Hau MTR station.
Hang Hau MTR exit A, then taxi to HKUST (approx. HKD 25-30). [If there is no taxi, walk to the right, turn right around the building to a taxi stand just inside the building, about 150 meters from exit A.] Taxi probably enters HKUST through the main =Northern gate (easily recognizable by flag posts, bus stops, roundabout before entrance), drives about 200m towards a red sundial (= bird-shaped figure = middle of inside-campus roundabout). If taxi enters through Southern gate (just a plain gate followed by a roundabout), which is faster, take first left immediately after gate (straight to sundial, about 300m).
Or minibus from Hang Hau MTR exit B1 (go into bus station): minibus 11 (HKD 5.50), heading for Choi Hong, get off at the university's main entrance (after about 10 minutes) = a roundabout in front of the main gate.
From Kowloon to HKUST (approx. 45+ minutes to HKUST gate)
MTR Kwun Tong Line to Choi Hong MTR station (if you are coming from Tsim Sha Tsui or Jordan, take Tsuen Wan Line towards Tsuen Wan, change at Mong Kong on same platform to Kwun Tong Line).
Choi Hong MTR exit C1, once you reach daylight turn around 180 degrees and walk 25m to minibus 11 (HKD 5.5) heading for Hang Hau. Get off at the university's main entrance (after about 10 minutes) = a roundabout in front of the main gate.
Taxi from Choi Hong not straightforward due to ongoing construction. Choi Hong MTR station exit B, walk up along road for about 300m, to several bus stop lanes to the left of the road, wave to passing taxis to drive off the main road into the bus stop lanes. At HKUST, taxi enters through main (=Northern) gate, drives about 200m towards a red sundial (= bird-shaped figure = middle of inside-campus roundabout). (HKD 50 to HKUST)
From airport to HKUST
Airport express train, MTR (mass transit railway
= metro), buses, and minibuses all accept the stored-value Octopus card
for fare payment. Otherwise you need to pay cash, with no change given
in buses and minibuses. Buy an Octopus card in the airport arrival hall
from the counter located roughly in the middle of the hall, towards the
train. Permanent deposit HKD 50 + minimum stored value of I think 100 (deposit
and remaining stored value are refundable at the same counter at the airport
when you leave, or at MTR stations). For the airport express train, pay
when you leave the station; for the other three means of transportation,
you pay as/before you enter. --- Don't change much money at the airport,
you lose 10% compared to changing at a bank downtown.
a. Taxi (approx. HKD 300+(?), 45 minutes(?))
b. Airport Express to
(i) Hong Kong Airport Express station (HKD 100, 30 minutes)c. Bus: I don't recommend except for sightseeing --- details at the bottom of this page
+ instructions "From Central" above (walk underground to MTR Island Line)(ii) Kowloon Airport Express station (HKD 90, 25 minutes)
+ taxi to HKUST (approx. HKD 120 + HKD 5 per piece of luggage, 30 minutes unless rush hour)(iii) Tsing Yi Airport Express station (HKD 60, 20 minutes)
+ taxi to HKUST (approx. HKD 150 + HKD 5 per piece of luggage, 30 minutes, OK all day)When I want to get to HKUST in 60 minutes and am willing to spend the HKD 200+, I do (ii) or (iii)
d. Tung Chung Line / MTR + minibus
Relatively fast (~80 minutes),
very cheap (HKD 27.1 with Octopus card), not good with lots of luggage
Bus S1 to Tung Chung (HKD 3.5, 10 minutes, runs about every 15 minutes)
The bus stop at the airport is not at the regular airport bus station; it's a "Tung Chung" bus stop.
Need to search for the few signs or ask.MTR from Tung Chung to Choi Hong with 2 train changes (HKD 18.1, total ~50 minutes)
* MTR Tung Chung Line to Lai King (<20 minutes)
* At Lai King: switch to MTR Tsuen Wan Line towards Central on same platform,
to Prince Edwards (<15 minutes)
* At Prince Edwards: switch to MTR Kwun Tong Line towards Tiu Keng Leng on same platform,
to Choi Hong (<15 minutes)From Choi Hong to HKUST see "From Kowloon" above (minibus 11, HKD 5.5, 10 minutes)
On campus, to Bistro
Coming from Hang Hau MTR station by taxi
Ask taxi driver to enter HKUST through Southern gate. After the gate,
continue in the same direction you came (slightly to the right), about
200m flat ground, heading towards a sequence of three about 6-story buildings
on the right, the third one (lowest one) = Tower C&D = University Center
& Apartments is it; ground floor, ocean-facing. Taxi fare around HKD
25.
From academic building
Far right corner of Jockey Club Atrium, middle (= glass) door (marked
University Center), leads outside, turn right, a few meters along the academic
building (Southward), a few steps up, keep heading along the academic building
Southward (parallel to ocean down on left). After about 300m, cross pedestrian
bridge, head towards the lowest of the buildings in front of you; Tower
C&D = University Center & Apartments; Bistro is on ground floor,
ocean-facing.
On campus, to guest accommodation / Visitor's Centre
200 meters down from the main gate is a campus-internal roundabout with
a red bird (sundial) in the middle. At the sundial you face the oval-shaped
academic building. To the immediate left, off the roundabout, is a road
leading downhill; follow this road 300 meters, past a car park (garage)
and then an open parking lot on the right, to two approx. 10-story buildings
on the left ("Tower 1" and "Tower 2"). The two buildings are connected
at the ground floor; this connection is the entrance to the Visitor's Centre.

Airport to HKUST by bus --- not recommended, except for sightseeing
(tends to take well above 60 minutes, with total price in the HKD 50-100
range)
a. A22 to Lam Tin (HKD 39)
Goes straight to Jordan Road (approx. 30 minutes), but then stops everywhere. 90-120 minutes to Lam Tin?
First downtown stop in Jordan Road: close by is an
MTR station. See instructions "From Kowloon" above.
Taxi: from one of the first downtown bus stops max.
HKD 120 to HKUST, 30 minutes unless rush hour.
From Lam Tin to HKUST: taxi, HKD 60, 15-20 minutes.
The bus service Lam Tin - HKUST is cancelled?
b. If you know your way around Hong Kong
Any A-numbered bus to Lantau Link Toll Plaza, then
switch to E lines
(cut out the 60 minutes
the E lines circle around the outlying airport buildings)
E22A (Tseung Kwan O): it stops up to 15 times along
the freeway (bearable),
at Diamond Hill MTR, and
then next(?) just 50m behind the Choi Hong minibus 11 stop.
From Choi Hong to HKUST see "From Kowloon" above (HKD 5.5, 10 minutes)
The other two
E Lines don't really make sense, but here they are:
* E22 (Lam
Tin): I think this one circles several times around Kowloon before reaching,
among others, Diamond Hill MTR -> get off as soon as possible and switch
to taxi.
* E23 (Choi
Hong): another sight-seeing tour through Kowloon -> get off as soon as
possible and switch to taxi.
